Advocate Christopher Shone
Areas of Legal Practice:
Chris practices in the areas of corporate and business law, mergers and acquisitions, corporate restructures, deceased estates (including estate planning, wills and trusts), funding and security, pension and disability benefits, insurance, social security, employment, intellectual property, sports (rugby union), insolvency and business rescue, planning, procurement, public interest law, constitutional and administrative law.
Chris acted as co-counsel in the Bread Cartel price fixing case, a public interest litigation matter, arguing for the first opt-in class action in South Africa, appearing in the High Court, the Supreme Court of Appeal and finally, with success, in the Constitutional Court.
Prior to being admitted as an advocate, Chris was a licensed insolvency practitioner and accepted appointments by the Master of the High Court in insolvent estates / companies in the Western Cape. He is the executor in a number of deceased estates and consults on a broad range of estate and related matters. He consults and provides opinions and acts as counsel on various complex legal matters including those concerning the constitutional right to access to information, corrupt transactions and procurement failures, public sector maladministration, public finance non-compliance, the solvency of state owned enterprises and more recently in relation to contemplated class action claims including the sale in execution of mortgaged properties.
Other Activities and Interests:
Chris lectured part-time at Varsity College in Cape Town on taxation and deceased and insolvent estates for the University of South Africa B.Compt degree and on advanced labour law and advanced corporate law for final year students reading for the University of South Africa LLB degree. Chris also lectured on the law module for the Diploma in Sports Law and Diploma in Hospitality Law.
Chris is a member of SARPIA, an associate of the Association of Arbitrators of Southern Africa and a member of the Pension Lawyers Association of South Africa. He is a director of Soma Initiative (Pty) Ltd and the Institute for Accountability in Southern Africa (campaigning as Accountability Now).
Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com), Baccalaureus Procurationis (B Proc), Bachelor of Laws (LLB), Master of Laws (LLM) Master of Business Administration (MBA) as well as a Post Graduate Certificate in Advanced Taxation, Diploma in Insolvency Law and Practice, Certificate in Advanced Insolvency Law and Practice, Certificate in Administration of Estates, Certificate in Pension Funds Law, Certificate in Advanced Corporate and Securities Law, Certificate in Sports Law, Certificate in Intellectual Property Law, Certificate in Advanced Taxpayers Rights, Certificate in Medical Law (Medical Malpractice) and an Advanced Certificate in Business Rescue Practice. Chris was admitted as an Advocate of the High Court of South Africa in April 2007.

With 35 years top level corporate business experience as CEO of a large South African distribution company, Lance has acquired the skills needed to help any company succeed. He holds a B.Bus.Sci.(honours) degree from UCT and a Master’s Degree in Science from the University of Surrey (UK). Lance has completed the Certificate course in Advanced Business Rescue Practice from UNISA Centre for Business Law and is a member of the Institute of Business Advisors of Southern Africa. Drawing on his extensive experience, Lance is equipped to provide distressed organisations with practical and comprehensive turnaround strategies and business models. He is highly respected and an integral member of our team.
